In my experience, the people who say things like “sex is not the most important thing in a relationship” usually aren’t having sex. Not that they’re wrong, but they’re not right either.

Sex isn’t the most important thing. But the frequency of sex is an excellent barometer for the health of your relationship. Unless, of course, you have mutually agreed to remove sex from the equation, which is okay.

It’s not as much about sex as it is about physical intimacy. Sex is probably the most popular way that married couples experience physical intimacy, which is why sex is essential.

Statistically speaking, the frequency of sex wanes over time in long-term relationships. Of course, this is not the reality of every couple. So if you’ve been together for a long time and you’re still fucking regularly — bravo! But if you’re in the sexless camp, keep reading.

*Fine print: There is no such thing as a normal amount of sex. You and your partner determine what “normal” is. But if you’re having sex once a month or less, trouble could be brewing in paradise.
