How Come Relationships with Good People Feel Unbalanced?

On being good, well-intentioned, and missing the emotional mark.

What does it mean to be a good person?

Socially speaking, good people possess morals and ethics, and are well-intentioned. In other words, being a good person means not being an asshole, at least not on purpose.

But sometimes… good people are not so good at relationships.

Morality is a great compass for right versus wrong. Think integrity, honesty, and fairness. Good people want the best for the people they love. They avoid betrayal and deception because that’s not what good people do.

Sounds like a recipe for being a great lover and life partner, yes? Not necessarily.

Sometimes good folks lack the emotional chops to navigate the complexities of intimacy.

That’s the thing about social constructs. And being a good person is just that —a construct.

That’s why we’re ISO someone who passes the good person background check. No malice. No hidden cruelty. No obvious instability.

Check. Check. And check.

A clean record makes them relationship material, in theory. But while checking the boxes might offer the appearance of safety, it doesn’t create depth.

Logistical competence is wonderful. It really is. But intimacy often begins where social decency ends.

Decency is about rules, peace, and fulfilling obligations. It teaches us how to act right.

Intimacy is a stark contrast. It’s messy, awkward, and uncomfortable. It leaves us feeling exposed and defenseless. And that’s the point.

That’s why being a good person can become a barrier.

When your sense of self is tied to being blameless, friction feels like an indictment. So when your partner expresses hurt or unpleasant feelings, the reflex is to defend instead of be curious.

Being decent might protect us from blame. But relationships (and intimacy) are inherently risky.

How’s that for a gut punch? 😮‍💨
