We don’t question it, because most of us are living it. The structure is the norm.
Once a romantic partner comes on the scene, the world contracts around it. Your friendships thin out. The people who knew you before see less of you.
Suddenly, the romance carries all the weight.
Which wouldn’t be terrible if desire didn’t need room to breathe. And if the other people in your orbit didn’t need you too.
