Is Having Less Sex Is the Real Mvp for Healthy Longterm Relationships?

On safety, risk, and dry spells

When did we decide that sexual frequency is the best way to measure relationship success?

Seriously. It’s right up there with the idea that longevity means you beat the odds.

We hand out trophies for 50th anniversaries, like surviving five decades automatically means they’ve figured it out. But let’s be real, plenty of couples go the distance by just functioning and going through the motions.

And sex gets sucked into that same bean counting trap.

So when ‌the fucking drops we panic. Why? Because sometimes we use sex as an insurance policy. If we’re doing it, we think we’re covered.

Because that’s easier than admitting that relationships aren’t inherently safe. No matter how much bumping and grinding is going on.

But what if… a dry spell isn’t a warning sign of impending doom? What if a sexual dip is just proof that sex isn’t being used as a bargaining chip anymore?

What if having less sex is actually the sexiest thing about your relationship in this season?

Subscribe to Sex IRL for unfiltered talk about love, intimacy, and relationships beyond 40.

In this episode, we’re debunking the myth of relational safety, taking a look at why frequency is a terrible crystal ball, and rethinking what it means to go the distance.
